Nascido em 1927, fez história no Oscar duas vezes - foi o primeiro negro a receber um Oscar de Melhor Ator em 1963 (pelo filme Uma Voz nas Sombras) e em 2002, por ser o primeiro artista negro a receber um Oscar honorário pelo Conjunto da Obra. E além das suas atividades como ator, Poitier sempre marcou presença nos movimentos pela defesa dos Direitos Civis.
